Painted during a period of intense experimentation, this work exemplifies de Staël's signature approach: thick impasto, geometric abstraction, and a profound sensitivity to light and atmosphere. The composition, with its blocks of muted whites, greys, and subtle blues, evokes the quiet stillness of a snow-covered Marseille, while the textured surface reveals the artist's physical engagement with his medium.

De Staël, a Russian-born French painter, was a key figure in post-war abstraction. His innovative use of palette knife and thick layers of paint created a sculptural quality that bridged abstraction and representation. Marseille under snow is a testament to his ability to distill the essence of a landscape into pure form and color.

Museum-Quality Reproduction

Our archival print of Marseille under snow is produced on our Master's Edition paper, ensuring a museum-quality reproduction that honors the original's texture and depth.

Paper: Off-white, uncoated, matte finish for a natural look

Weight: 250 gsm (110 lb), thickness 0.29 mm (11.4 mils)

Acid-Free: pH above 7, preventing yellowing over time

Sustainable: FSC-certified paper

Sizes: Available in 4 sizes to suit your space

Each print is crafted with precision, capturing the subtle tonal variations and impasto details of de Staël's original.
